You make time to take your kids to the doctor for their checkups. You make sure they learn to swim. You take them to soccer, ballet, art and music classes. You care that they grow up to be well-rounded and well-adjusted. But what about protecting your kids in the case of an emergency? There's one thing you may not have thought to put on your to-do list: getting summer-ready by getting CPR trained.
If you and your family plan to spend more time around the pool, lake or beach like my family does, make sure you get CPR trained. Summer offers up a time of carefree playing outdoors and splashing water games, but as you can imagine, more drownings happen during summer months.
Thus the first week in June begins National CPR and AED Awareness Week. The great ladies at Mom Central have joined with the American Heart Association to raise awareness for all to get trained in this life-saving skill. We think it critical for parents to get trained in CPR so we can protect our families. By learning CPR we all make a small commitment that could save the life of someone we love.
As a mom, I know how busy life can be. I've found that the American Heart Association offers several options for learning CPR. In addition to traditional classroom courses, they offer a self-directed course, CPR Anytime. In just 22 minutes, you can learn CPR. The kit comes with an inflatable, reusable mannequin and instructional DVD. You can choose from an infant kit (for children under one year old) or child/adult kit. If you had prior CPR training but your skills have gotten rusty, now is your chance to brush up. The more you practice, the more automatic the skill will become. By starting a CPR program now, Moms get one step ahead of the game. When faced with an emergency, you will feel confident and know exactly what to do.
Check out the American Heart Association's website to learn more about their life-saving campaign. Sign up for a CPR course and log your training on the site.
The new Healthy Choice has taken a fresh approach to healthy eating, which does not include counting calories or being on a diet. This year Healthy Choice introduced a fresh new look, along with reinvented and contemporary recipes, meals with positive nutrition and new all natural entrées, to make your meal decisions easy, and give you the great taste you crave and the nutrition your body needs.
The new line of Healthy Choice All Natural Entrées is filled with protein, whole grains, fiber and antioxidants to help promote heart and digestive health, all without preservatives, artificial flavors or colors, so that you can feel good about the food you eat and serve to your family. The only brand in its category that can call 100% of its products "healthy" as approved by the FDA, Healthy Choice's complete line of nutritious products makes maintaining a healthy lifestyle and making smart eating choices easy.
With this in mind, Dr. James Rippe, a leading authority on lifestyle and health, just concluded a six-month study with overweight adults who started a light exercise routine in combination with some healthier food choices including one low-fat Healthy Choice meal per day. Dr. Rippe will share his research-driven insights on how to successfully lose weight and embrace a healthier lifestyle via a special telebriefing on Monday, April 20 at 11:00 a.m. EDT.
I listened to this telebriefing, and I must say that it was very motivating. I try to cook/serve healthy meals (at least five days a week). One thing that I sometimes overlook is sodium content. Healthy Choice meals offer delicious meals that also contain healthy amounts of sodium. Also, Healthy Choice meals are easy to find at your local grocery store. You'll find a great selection of delicious items. Once you try them you'll wonder why you waited so long to start eating healthy!
KaBOOM!, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding and creating play spaces within walking distance for every child, has embarked on a nationwide mission to help communities build playspaces. This proves critical for those many children living in neighborhoods without playgrounds or playspaces, or unable to use existing ones because of rundown conditions or dangerous neighborhoods.
Innumerable times, the local playground became a haven for me when my little kids were bouncing off the walls at home. Fresh air and a safe, fun area where kids could let loose and release all of their boundless energy often proved a sanity saver! KaBOOM! believes that play has a purpose and unstructured play in particular helps make children happier, fitter, smarter, more socially adept and creative. So how can we help make this a reality for kids in less fortunate neighborhoods?
Mom Central has teamed up with KaBOOM! to help map online 100,000 playspaces in 100 days. Here's what counts as a playspace: a playground, field, a skate park, roller hockey rink, lake, dog park, community center, basketball court or ice rink - any place where kids can engage in unstructured play for free or a nominal fee. A playspace listing on KaBOOM! consists of an address or cross street and a description, one photo and one rating.
KaBOOM! has made creating this playspace listing easy: either a quick fill-in on their website or even easier - a twitpic from your cellphone.
For every play space entered into the KaBOOM! database on behalf of the Mom Central team, $1 will be donated to Jumpstart, a non-profit that brings at-risk preschool children and caring adults together to improve literacy. It's something to feel doubly good about!
Moreover, we all stand to benefit as all the playspaces with their photos and ratings will be available to us as we go on road trips this spring and summer, to visit relatives, or on vacation. You can go online and find cool places to take your kids to play- near Grandma's, the hotel, or off the highway to break up a long drive.
KaBOOM! wants to find 100,000 playspaces in 100 days as detailed on their website.
Well the weather was great this past Sunday, and we were able to have Cameron's party at the Wildlife Park. Here he is riding a pony all by himself. We let the pony guide walk him around the little trail and he never knew that Cameron even had any physical limitations. That was a cool feeling.
We went on a tram ride to see animals such as emus, ostriches, llamas, and an ox. We saw something called a "zonkey" (donkey/zebra) as well as kangaroos, giraffes, and even an alligator.
Cameron had a great time, and the rest of the family did too. This was his first big party with more than just immediate family. I'm glad we finally gave him a little adventure for a change!
Have you ever found yourself wishing that dinner would magically put itself on the table? Between running errands and driving your kids around to their many activities, it can certainly become a scramble to put together a healthy meal at the end of the day. Leisurely family dinners often seem like a luxury of the past. While it might be easier to have pizza or fast food on the way to soccer practice, making time to sit down and eat together remains important for a variety of reasons - from family bonding to communication to mental and physical health!
We are big spaghetti fans at our house. A little pasta and sauce with meatballs or french bread and a salad makes a great meal that is quick, nutritious, and delicious! I start with Ragu's all natural red sauces as they contain more than a full serving of vegetables in every half-cup of sauce. And now, Ragu has introduced two new varieties of Ragu Old World Style pasta sauce - Sweet Tomato Basil and Margherita. These two new sauces also come with great new recipes to help you get a delicious and healthy dinner on the table even on your busiest nights!
Check out the Ragu website to learn about nutritional, parenting, and time-management tips. You'll find helpful tips, healthy meal options and recipes that are designed to make meal planning easier. I am so glad to have learned about this from the nice ladies over at Mom Central.
Have you ever made a decision – regarding your family or your own life - that you later
regretted? Felt guilty about? Wished you could take back?
Many of us have. With our busy lifestyles and the uncertainties of parenting, it becomes easy to let stress and expedience get the best of our decisions, whether we find ourselves faced with a big life choice or something as small as what to do with our kids for the afternoon.
But what if you had had a tool to help you think through the choices and determine how the decision would impact your life immediately, in the short term, and over a long period of time?
Enter 10-10-10: A Life Transforming Idea. This book by best-selling author Suzy Welch, a mother of four and a columnist for BusinessWeek and O, The Oprah Magazine, provides moms with a decision-making practice that is as simple as it is profound. Through her own story and those of others, Suzy shows readers the ways in which using the 10-10-10 method can remove the emotion and uncertainty from decision-making and dramatically change how you make choices, both big and small, in your life. With every decision, all you need to do is consider your options and their consequences in ten minutes, ten months, and ten years, and then compare them to your own set of values. The goal of this practice is an authentic life through which consistency replaces chaos and guilt replaces joy.
While the 10-10-10 Life-Transforming Idea may not always be easy to apply, it enables Moms to think things through in a truly significant way, explain them clearly to others, prepare for the consequences of their decisions, and feel confident about their choices. Drawing on her own experience as a Mom with humor and candor along with the stories of others who rely on 10-10-10, Suzy shows readers the ways in which this method can serve a as powerful tool to utilize within our families, to teach our children to make good decisions on their own, and to build trust between parent and child.
Not only does this book provide intriguing insights into the life of an extremely dynamic and successful woman, it provides a principle that will truly resonate with moms by helping them live by their own values and priorities as parents. Eloquent, compassionate, and full of anecdotes you will relate to, 10-10-10 is more than a great book; it’s a life lesson.
I was so happy to receive my own copy of this book from the nice ladies at Mom Central. This book is currently on the shelves. Check out the book's website for more information!
I think I have already mentioned before that my husband and I have been looking at copper sinks for our half bathroom downstairs. Well, we kind of put that project on hold for a while. But, recently I found the perfect one! I love being able to shop online, since it takes out all the stress of being rushed in a store. We finally agreed on which one we like, now we just need to order it.
Have you ever noticed how many different kinds of appetite suppressants there are? I recently went to buy vitamins, and I was shocked by how many choices there are for these pills. I have to admit that I am curious to see if they work. But, I have never tried them. I remember when a new one came out in the early 90s, and lots of people were taking it. I wonder if there were any side effects for those?
I seriously need a new phone. What I want is an iphone, but what I'll get is yet to be determined. I saw a great sale on iphones recently. My last phone was great, but then I dropped it in the toilet. So currently I'm using a phone that's about six years old. The video I saw describing all the apps on the new iphone makes me want to go out and get one today....but for now I'm stuck with my old school special.
I recently read some nuphedra reviews. Some people think that this is a great way to lose weight. Personally, I am not into taking substances to help you lose weight. I think you should get outside and take a walk, and then you will naturally want to eat less. I suppose that for some people this is a good solution, but some people might need something to get them started on the right track.
With the economy in its current condition, I guess there are less people planning summer vacations this year. All I know is that there are many great deals to be had on Orlando vacations. I'm not sure if Cameron is ready for Disney World this year, but we would love to bring him to Pensacola. The beaches are beautiful, and it really isn't that bad of a drive. Chris and I drove there a couple of years ago, and we loved it. It's perfect if you're not into crowds.
I am really tired of these commercials that are pushing pills as the best option to lose weight. If I see one more diet pill ad I will scream! The only way to lose weight is to eat less and get moving. I recommend getting moving first. Then, you'll be less likely to pig out if that will negate your exercising efforts. Plus, exercise releases natural endorphins, which naturally make you feel better. So go for a walk! Don't just pop a pill.
Have you ever had a mold or mildew stain that just wouldn't go away? Well, if so, you need to get your hands on a bottle of X-14 Mold & Mildew Remover. This stuff is awesome! It's a strong solution designed to tackle mold and mildew stains - one of the toughest cleaning problems around the home, RV or boat. In fact, X-14 is proven to keep mildew stains from returning for up to two weeks! With X-14, scrubbing is not required. Just spray on X-14 Mold & Mildew Stain Remover and watch stains disappear! Due to its main ingredient, bleach, this product does have a strong odor. This is why it is recommended that you open a window and/or use a vent fan after use.
You might be wondering which areas can be cleaned by this product. X-14 is recommended for use on outside surfaces like walls, decks, concrete, masonry, tile roofs, plastic furniture, awnings, vinyl (however, when using on vinyl, do not allow product to contact cotton stitching or backing), mortar, plastic tubs, boats and marine surfaces and vinyl covers, swimming pool liners and hot tubs. While you must rinse after using this product, it is worth your time and trouble. This product will remove those stubborn stains that you thought you'd never get rid of! I'm so glad I learned about this product from the nice ladies over at Mom Central!
After running around all day, whether it's chasing toddlers or shuffling kids to and from soccer practice, Moms deserve a treat at the end of the day. However, for those of us watching what we eat and the ingredients in the foods we buy, we are sometimes limited in our sweet-toothed choices. Snacks that are packed with artificial ingredients are among those off-limits treats that we not only don't want to buy for our kids, but for ourselves.
Haagen-Dazs, original maker of super premium ice cream, now goes beyond their goal of using pure ingredients. The new Haagen-Dazs Five series is made from just FIVE all-natural ingredients of milk, cream, sugar, eggs, and one hero flavor ingredient such as vanilla bean, mint, coffee, ginger, or milk chocolate. Using just five pure and simple ingredients naturally lends itself to an ice cream with one-third less fat. What makes me appreciate this clean label product (other than the taste, of course!), is that it's a dessert you can feel good about sharing with the whole family.
You might be thinking, ginger ice cream? Really?? When I received my four delicious samples (oh yeah) I was wondering what ginger ice cream would taste like myself. It was delicious! My husband hit the mint and the brown sugar, but considering they are gone, they must have been good. I'm
hiding saving the passion fruit flavor for a rainy day, but it will be hard to resist. I have to say thanks to the nice ladies over at Mom Central for hooking me up with this delicious opportunity!
If you have a toddler, you are probably familiar with Wow! Wow! Wubbzy. It's a great new show all about values such as cooperation, sharing, honesty, and fairness. We could all use a little more of those things in the world. They teach kids through example, and encourage acts of kindness.
The newest Wubbzy DVD, Pirate Treasure, is available in stores right now. In this 82 minute DVD (5 regular and 2 bonus episodes - including one never before seen episode),your little ones will follow Wubbzy and his friends as they discover a world of fun adventures. Familiar characters such as Wubbzy, Widget and Walden search to find buried pirate treasure and discover what happens when Wubbzy gets lost in the woods and why Walden is afraid of the beach. The DVD provides preschoolers great entertainment while still teaching them important social lessons about how to treat others.
What a great non-candy idea for your kindergartner! I was so glad to hear about this DVD from the nice ladies over at Mom Central. Check out www.wubbzy.com for more details!
If you have kids, you are probably well aware that adding ranch dressing will help get your kids to eat any raw vegetable. Let's face it - the stuff is tasty and it adds pizazz to an otherwise boring snack. The makers of Hidden Valley Salad Dressings have created a free online game, called Veggie Adventures that can be played now at LoveYourVeggies.com. Keeping in mind a recent study that indicated that 60 percent of parents play computer games with their kids, the makers of Hidden Valley Dressings hope Veggie Adventures will be yet another tool for moms to utilize to expand their young children's appreciation for vegetables.
Veggie Adventures engages families in a three-part vegetable adventure that begins with growing vegetables on the farm and ends with serving and sharing vegetables with friends. Along with fun and easy game-play, Veggie Adventures provides players with great tips and vegetable facts meant to be transplanted outside of the gaming experience. At the end of each stage, players receive a printable certificate to commemorate their success.
Head on over to their website and try it out! You know you want to...It's actually really cute. I'm so glad I learned about this site from the great ladies over at Mom Central.
Have you heard about the St. Xavier MS Nursing Program? They offer this Master of Science in Nursing along with the Clinical Nurse Leader Masters Degree. Of course, if you are interested in pursuing this degree, you must already have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college. The great thing about St. Xavier's is that they offer online courses. This makes it so much more practical, and allows you to continue with your current job. One weekend of applied campus experience is also included. If you are looking to increase your salary and your demand in this market, getting a Master of Science in Nursing, or in Clinical Nurse Leadership will definitely make this possible! Having an advanced degree will help you find the exact job that you've always wanted.
There are so many different supplements out there that claim to help you get the toned, healthy body that we all want. I have heard about HGH supplements, different types of weighloss pills, and then of course all the vitamins and herbs that are supposed to help. I think that some people probably see benefits from some of these things. But, for me, I'll stick to attempting to eat pretty well and getting about thirty minutes of exercise a day. It really isn't that hard if you make yourself a priority.
I have always wanted to try running a franchised business. One of my relatives once had a yogurt shop, but it wasn't part of a franchise. With a franchise, you naturally get the name recognition that inevitably brings warm bodies through the door. The down side is that your profits are shared up the corporate ladder. Recently I heard about a franchise opportunity that sounded fun. I wish I had the startup cash to get it rolling!
I have tried lots of "work from home" jobs. I still piddle in doing paid blog posts (obviously). But, I haven't found the perfect "work from home" opportunity. I've started tutoring from home, and that is actually really fun. I enjoy interacting with students that might be anywhere in North America. I also heard about insurance lead generation. This might be something to learn more about.
At our house, we've been using Listerine for years. I especially like the citrus flavored variety. So when I was asked by the nice ladies at Mom Central and Johnson's to try a sample of Listerine Total Care and to blog about it, I was thrilled!
One of our most important jobs as Moms is to make sure that everyone in our family takes care of themselves. In the midst of this, we often completely overlook our own healthy habits. Case in point: oral health care. For me, brushing teeth: check. Flossing: well I try for twice a day, once realistically. But rinsing with mouthwash is such an important step that many people skip!
With our ever growing to-do lists it can be so easy to neglect our personal oral health, but with 92% of adults ages 20 to 64 experiencing dental decay in our permanent teeth at some point in our lives, proper oral care routines and preventive dental care visits prove more essential than ever for achieving a cleaner, healthier mouth. We need to take notes from what we tell our kids - by doing simple things regularly including brushing, flossing and rinsing twice daily and visiting your dentist twice a year for preventative care, you can avoid bigger problems down the line that require painful oral procedures and may cost thousands of dollars. An alarming recent survey by Cigna indicates that 41 percent of Americans are taking worse care of their health because of the economy.
LISTERINE® TOTAL CARE, Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash, now available, is the only fluoride mouthwash that contains six benefits in one:
· Helping to prevent cavities
· Restoring enamel
· Strengthening teeth
· Killing bad breath germs
· Freshening breath
· Fighting unsightly plaque above the gum line
Go out and get a bottle of this stuff the next time you're shopping. You owe it to yourself and your family!
Did you know that only 46% of people treat wounds to soothe them and relieve pain? Painful wounds including splinters, shaving cuts, blisters, hang nails, ripped cuticles, paper cuts and burns account for nearly 40% of wound types that people sustain. Sound familiar? Even minor cuts and scrapes can become contaminated with dirt and germs, which may cause infection. I really wish that I could go an entire week without somehow getting a scrape or cut. While this rarely happens, at least I can feel good in knowing that I have something that will help me feel better and prevent infection at the same time.
Neosporin + Pain Relief First Aid Antibiotic/Pain Relieving Ointment and Cream help prevent infection and provide temporary relief of pain or discomfort in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. What I love about Neosporin is that it is suitable for ages 2 and up. They even now make Neosporin Neo to Go! First Aid Antiseptic/Pain Relieving Spray. This stuff comes in a cool pocket size spray that you can bring everywhere!
I hope that we can go somewhere really fun this summer. I would love to rent an rv and drive to Florida. That's my goal, but it may not happen this year. I know that you can rent a space in rv parks for a very reasonable price. I suppose the gas might be just as expensive as staying in a hotel, but I just think it would be really fun. Plus, we could bring Buster and Cameron would really enjoy that aspect.
I really like how the area we live in has been landscaped. Everything has been remulched and it is starting to look like spring around here. Even though the trees in our own yard are pretty puny, there are plenty of nice mature trees around the parks and greenbelts. Apricot trees, Live Oaks, Magnolias, and Sycamore trees are my favorites. Hopefully the little trees in our front yard will withstand another hurricane season.
Do you ever get the feeling that you don't have enough insurance coverage? Sometimes I think we need to get more. I know you can find affordable term life insurance quotes online. Even though we're fairly young, you just never know what will happen. We want Cameron to be financially protected should something happen to us. We all have to be prepared for almost anything. I know when Hurricane Ike hit our area, we were happy to have flood insurance. Thank God we didn't have to file any claims.
I think I have finally found the office furniture I want to buy for Chris' office. Yes, it probably should be his decision. But, the space is limited in the bedroom. I found a great set of filing drawers (goodbye stacks of paper all over the house!) and a small computer desk that will fit perfectly in there. The room also contains my elliptical machine and the exercise bike, so there wasn't much room for error.
Have you ever wondered how you can positively impact the relationship your kids have with money? With the current economic crisis going on right now, our wallets and savings accounts have all been hit pretty hard. This has resulted in most of us reevaluating our discretionary spending. Kids must learn about the relationship between work and money, and how to keep a budget of some sort.
To help us balance the desire of our kids with the balance in our checking accounts, Discover Card came up with a truly innovative debit card called Current by Discover Card. It is designed especially for kids ages 13 to 18. The Current Card helps us teach our kids (born in a digital age) how to manage spending. Like car companies that allow you to set the maximum speed limit on your teen's car, Current by Discover Card puts moms in control by letting you set (daily, weekly, monthly) spending limits, block, certain merchant categories (like ATMs and liquor stores) and track your teen's spending online or through email and text message alerts. Plus, because it's a debit card product, the card stops working when the limit is reached without incurring any additional fees, which protects your teens from overspending.
As parents, we have the responsibility to discuss wise spending habits as a family. Discover Card created an online resource, www.currentbydiscover.com, to help us talk with our kids about managing and spending money, and the importance of setting limits.
Experience often serves as the best teacher. The Current by Discover Card provides kids with access to money in the way they want it while still giving us Moms what we need - independent spending by our kids without debt or incurring hidden fees. No more surprise credit card balances from your teen's "minor" shopping spree.
No teen wants to miss out on all of the fun - from a friend's Sweet 16 party to a big home football game - because of being sick at home with the flu. That's why singer/songwriter and former American Idol finalist Brooke White has teamed up with infectious disease specialist and author of Germ Proof Your Kids, Dr. Harley Rotbart, and The Clorox Company to launch I Don't Want to Miss..., a national contest that puts teens in the spotlight to talk about flu education and prevention.
The heart of the program is a PSA contest in which teens can submit a short 45-60 second video entry to IDontWantToMiss.com, sharing what they most don't want to miss out on and why that makes flu prevention important. What a fun, creative challenge for our teens and their friends!
For the first time this year, the CDC expanded flu vaccination guidelines to include all children six months through 18 years old. However, a new national survey shows that only 16% of parents with teens are aware of this new recommendation. I know that we all get flu shots at our house. I would much rather have a small little injection than the flu virus!
The winning contestant will win an acoustic concert from former American Idol finalist Brooke White at his/her school! The second place winner will receive a guitar autographed by Brooke White herself, and three runners-up will win autographed photos. If you know a teen who would enjoy seeing Brooke White perform at their school, you should let them know about this exciting contest! I am so glad to have learned about this opportunity from the great ladies at Mom Central!
When we were kids, a school project inevitably included a trip to the library. Video games were pretty simple (yet engaging), and going to the movies was an exciting event. Of course, our kids interact with technology on a different level, using computers and the Internet for everything from talking with new friends living across the globe to playing their favorite online games and researching subjects for homework. .
As parents, we often find it difficult to allow our kids complete freedom on the Internet. We understand it holds very real dangers, but we recognize that we can't protect them 100%.
To help families facing this dilemma, Norton, a trusted provider of Internet safety products, has developed Norton Online Family. Unlike most products that simply block or monitor kids' Internet activities, Norton Online Family is an online service that connects parents to kids' online lives.
Key Norton Online Family features include:
Simple, One-Time Set Up: Create an account online and customize each family member's profile based on age and maturity level.
Easy to Use and Access: Check a child's activity or modify a child's profile, preferences, or time allotment anytime and anywhere using any Internet-connected device.
Clear Reporting: All activities are reported in chronological order and only show the Web sites a child intended to visit - eliminating all the extra URLs, like ads, from Web sites.
Helpful Search Insight: Easily view what words and phrases a child uses to search and where those searches lead online.
Convenient Web Site Control: Control the Web content that flows into the home by prohibiting more than 40 topic categories.
Secured Personal Information: Track, report and prevent personal information that a child may purposely or accidentally try to send via e-mail, IM or social networking site.
Access to Social Network Information: Monitor activity on social networks like Facebook and MySpace with the ability to see how kids represent themselves, when they login and how often.
Real-time Messaging: Built-in messaging allows parents to have real-time discussions with children about activities and better understand their intentions when visiting a Web site.
True Transparency: Children are able to view the "house rules" they established with parents at any time and are notified when Norton Online Family is active, so there is no "stealth" mode.
Custom Alerts: Parents can customize e-mail alerts to address urgent events so they know immediately when a child has reached a time limit or visited a blocked site, etc.
Useful Time Management: An easy-to-use time management feature that - if parents find it necessary - gives each child a "curfew" that will limit computer usage.
